Maybe I am the only insane one feeling like this, but  I am so pissed about another of my games making such HUGE changes that I wont be playing it anymore. this is long, but if your a gamer, read it, you will understand my rant more so.

okay so now some history of ROC.  ROC was made when KOC went bad.  KOC did just about the same thing to people whom played accounts that were saber’s, they destroyed it.  And of course the years of me being a bully and mean and destroying accounts came back to bite me in the ass, I was destroyed by a lot of people in quite a few alliances, why because you couldn’t play the game the way I did anymore.  KOC is now a negotiating game, everyone negotiates u to death until your so tired of hearing it you cry into submission and beg them to shut up.

ROC has now followed suit.  I am probably one of the last true saber’s (people whom build mostly all spy and coverts in their account) so they can destroy people.  So to me this is like losing being told you have to sit at the back of the bus because your black.  They made ROC because KOC fucked up and took away the huge sabotage feature which make Kings of Chaos, well chaotic.  People like me flooded the game, OMG we can sab again, death destruction and ruin!

and BAM… take it away.

My alliance has been around a while and there have been a huge number of people in it, were small now so the changes would effect us hugely to where defending ourselves would be an issue. Okay sure, you say, meh your being a baby.  If your going to make one type of account so hard to play, then why implement it in your game?  The other style of accounts don’t nearly have that kind of restrictions.  It makes no sense. Like putting elves in Lotro and then making them def mutes with no weapons, pointless.

Kings of Chaos used to have a player base of around 500k in its day, then after almost a year age 7, they came back, had a short beta and fucked the whole game up. Made such drastic changes that in age 11, which I think is what the game is in now, there is about 24k players. Granted tons of accounts were doubles and triples, but a heavy player base left of veterans after the changes. I was just a glutton for punishment and stayed a bit longer

Moving to Ruins of Chaos, it had everything I liked, sabotage, and one account on another couldn’t do much damage, I get mass sabbed a lot and have a huge amount of weapon damage, I cant image more, it will make my alliance not be able to play.

Its like losing a dog.  I am hurt and pissed off. If you don’t game or haven’t in one game for years, you cant understand.  you feel loyal to your games and their communities, whether anyone likes me or not, they get used to me and mine being there.

Why make a game to pull people to it because they play one style, and then so drastically change it. I just don’t get it, and I suppose will never understand it. I must say the one programmer of the game ROC he does play, and he is considered a ranker.  A probably why a lot of the sab changes were made. this goes back to my post on should programmers play their own games actively.  Maybe maybe not, but when you have betas and don’t take in the voice of the people you invite to the beta, why bother, just change shit to accommodate the cliques and tell the rest to fuck off .  Tim aka vengefuldeath had once told me he wanted the game to make money, but to make money you have to market to the whole of the game, not just part of it.

Seems to me they have taken their ball and gone home.

    Funny encounter the other day while shopping at the food store.  I was minding my own business, deciding at the last moment to change dinner from just baked ziti to throwing some chicken parm in the mix because the chicken was such a great deal and I over hear a conversation,

“I will be on tonight (pause) yea… uhmmm, no, no, late, when she goes to bed”

Thinking I had just stumbled upon some hot torrid steamy trist, my ears peaked and I moved down the meat isle to the ham steaks to get a better listen, yes I am nosey!

“Well, Ninjae will be there, and so will Blackjack”

Okay unless this was some weird fetish with hookers, this guy was either in some terrorists plot and was some kind of super op, or he was a gamer.

“We plan on attacking as a group (pause) uh-uh, well that’s why Its so late, if she knows I’m gaming there will be hell to pay”

Now of course I am more intrigued as from the back of him he looks to be older, well older then me, and I’m 40. He was wearing a business suit as well, and had a briefcase in his cart.

“Oh no doubt, that guy is going to deserve to get his shit raided. Ive had enough of his clan, this is to the death”

It was like caging an animal and then showing it food after a week and keeping it just out of reach of the food, almost wanting to spin him around and see whom this undercover gamer was, I was beside myself with hidden glee.  Slowly I moved around near the milk so I could see if I possibly new this man, slowly..slowly…

“Hi Mr. blahBlah!” I responded, it was the superintendent of schools. /dies

We went on with a bit of small chatter, and I commented how I saw he was on the phone and didn’t want to interrupt his call, he shook my hand and said it was nice running into me.  I turned to check out the bottle water, no I didn’t need any, but was trying to figure out what game he was playing. Curiosity had the better of me, even if it did kill the cat, I was pretty sure in one game or another I had been a cat and had a few lives left in me.

He walked past me and laughed loudly to his “clan mate” on his cell, “Well its a good thing I’m off tomorrow, will have to use the ‘I had insomnia excuse, again’”

I walked through the rest of the store, looking at people, the old lady with the walker, gamer? or mild mannered senior lady?  I’m serious, this guy was well into his 60s.  Was I shocked, okay I admit it, a little.  Maybe that’s because to me, It wouldn’t shock people to find out or realize I am a gamer, but I don’t hide it and am not ashamed of my gaming status, but along side my piercings and tattoos, when people know I game, they get a “oh, typical” kind of look on their face.  When you find out the superintendent of schools is a gamer and apparently a hardcore clan leading one, its… more then intriguing!

There is a stigma to the tag gamer.  People usually see some pre-teen up all night, empty bags of chips and soda cans littering the surrounding area, but rarely I’m sure do they imagine a man of 65ish, leading the cities schools, as a virtual war monging warlord.  Gamers to me are like the skaters of yesteryear.  When you were a kid, us 40 something, skateboarding was a crime, and to say you wanted to do it for a living, could get you kicked out of a family will and made to have your name changed, and now, its as close as an Olympic event.  Granted the gaming industry is huge, and the industry itself is a money maker.  To tag yourself as a gamer, leaves most adults with visions of kids with no life whom will amount to nothing.

I wonder now how many closet gamers there are, CEOs, head of banks, prim and proper business elite whom work a 9 to 5 job and come home, kiss the wife/husband and kids, take out the dog and when all are asleep, evolve into some kind of sub human beastie whom ravishes and pillages some virtual community.

I have played enough small scale MMO’s to have seen cheating at its best.  Usually these small scale MMO’s are made by guys or girls whom want to create a spin off of something they enjoy playing already, but somewhere along the line of playing this so called MMO, the admins of it changed something.  This player then decides he or she can make one just like it, but better, more destructive or the opposite, more sedative.

They make the game in every way they like, down to the ratios with sabotage or attack to the colors of the page, voila! Their perfect game. So while they are tweaking and adjusting, people come and play, and the creator plays as well. Hmm, he/she has the biggest account, the biggest DA the biggest total fighting force.. hmm indeed.  So the players of the game start to accuse and to question. When they do it in the games open chat area, they are banned, said reasons are “there are no cheating accusations here”

Things like this happen all the time in these small scale MMO’s that i know of.  So, if you create a game should you not be able to play it like the rest of the players you invite?   This is essentially why they created the game in the first place, to make a game to their design specifications, is it not? Or should you just keep your account to watch the game and see how it is going and to help solve issues in it when needed?

Ill give you an example of some issues with a game I know of that gets this a lot.  It has about 5k players. Now there are 2 creators of the game, the one was AWOL for a while and then came back secretly under and assumed game name (at first) and played the game, he immediately had a huge account and it was questioned as a cheat account. It was even suspended for a time, either to make it look good for the community or because the other admin actually didn’t know it was him.  Basically there is always a question about this Admins playing.  Okay so admin 1 decides he doesn’t want to deal with crap like this and”hires” other admins, the cheating accusations go on with the other creator of the game and now you find that one of the new admins is, as well  a top ranked account.  THEN we find out one of the admins new about a glitch in the system and used it to benefit his alliance, he resigned his position and the big accounts in his alliance were banned as well.

Okayyyy, this is a lot of stuff for one game, can anyone say Drama? BUT it leads back to the question, should the makers of game be allowed to play actively.  As a player some might say well they know all the ins and outs, they know how to get around certain issues, then as a creator some might say, but I made the game because I like to play these kinds of games.

There is the saying though, It is his/her game if you don’t like it, go play another one.  How fair is that though, they want people to play the game.  They want the game to be a big MMO (they being the creators/admins)  so what do you do?

Make the community happy and not play, or play the game because you love gaming and say, fuck it all to the community. Some would say it depends on if they made the game for fun or profit, but the games that are speckled with  Ad Sense add would suggest to me that some money is wanted to be made, marketing wise at that point I would say, don’t play the game for the betterment of the selling of the game to other possible players.  If its for fun, then who cares?

I know this much, games on the net get reputations like the 9th grade girl whom will go down on a first date, a reputation could make or break your game either way.  Hours upon hours are spent defining your game, do you want to be know as the “Game where Admins don’t give a shit?” or the game” dude, its richeous and the Admins rock” kinda game?

‘Tis a fine line in the net spectrum, what do you think?

Decided to transfer this comedic diary of when I was playing Kings of Chaos.  It was  aboutt he 3rd year of me playing, everyone was cheating and I decided to have someone else “bank” my account.  So I was suspended for a week.  Now mind you I was WAY over the top with gaming online at that point, dedicating every waking moment , living, eating, breathing this game, and then …… they took it away from me.  We often still use the chat feature IRC or mIRC as it is refrenced here  alot.  Alot of the alliances in KOC are also mentioned here PR (Phoenix Rising) BSS(Bonsai Sab Squad)

Disgruntled, i stumbled to the kitchen, turne don the coffee pot, and went to the computer, opened up my auto login and was rudely reminded

    Thought that would get your attention! Well you all know you idolize or follow someone in gaming, wether it be console games or PC, browser paid or free, think to yourself “Wow, wouldn’t it be cool if I could meet So and So?”  For years I have worked for some of these so called gods of the games on a lower level and it always amused me their status to these simple peasant gamer addicts *sarcasm*

I will name a name here, Kings of Chaos.  In its hay-day it was World War III all wrapped up in a text/turn based browser based game.  The community was filled with 500k or so hackers, villains and God like players.  You know the ones whom are ranked 10 and higher.  I will admit I used to be this way with certain people in this game.  One of them became my arch enemy as a matter of fact for a while.  Then I became one of the demi gods, the hated and loathed, which was cool.  But the makers and creators of the game, they were a mysterious bunch of tech nerds from high school (now MIT)

They would come into mirc and their presence would set off a wave of excitement, and everyone would join the main mirc channel, with the numbers growing into the 100’s for the channel.  Everyone was buzzing with “Hi Rocco!” and “OMG AMAN IS HERE!” lol It was a site to watch, these humble gaming creatures pawing over .. kids in high school that made a game, each wanting them to devote just that bit of time to acknowledge their presence in chat. They rarely did talk to anyone, only chatting with the ~ or & or sometimes % in the IRC based network *sigh* how we all wish  *rolls eyes*

When I did some admining for one of these demi gods for his recruiter, even though I was hated, it upped me to a different level of god-likeness. Was amusing how the people whom had actually posted death threats to me at one time were now actually kissing my ass, and why? Because I was an extension of the demi god, not the main guys but a guy whom had made his status so Godlike in this game, and I was the next best thing.  But, I would talk to people, admins of KOC made themselves so unreachable that to see them in IRC or chatting with the commoner was like OMG, HE SPOKE TO ME! But it got to the point that they made themselves too unreachable.  The fans, whom idolized them, started to hate them.  Why? Maybe they realized they were mere mortals! Just some kids in school whom happened to create a project for school that turned into a huge game.

I was recently reading a blog I follow now, and it is someone whom I had known of and somewhat followed his work in a sense, but not the games he worked for as they really are not my notch group of games.  But the guy has a great mind.   I read through his blog and wasn’t until today that I caught a part of what he said when re-reading a post of his;

I laughed, and thought “Wow, he IS a big guy” How humbling it was to me as  he feels he is a small guy.  When I mentioned his name to some others I chat with, they did the usual OMFG reaction, and I said, “Yea, he is a decent guy, not all Godlike with himself, he actually talks to the little people”  It was said in sarcasm as we all have been in the realm of Godlike admins and their “I rule here attitude”

I really don’t know if this blog tonight is going anywhere.  It was nice to meet someone I had followed performance wise and find out he puts his pants on like me, jumps into them

When we hear the word “gamer” what comes to mind.  Typically a young net geek guy from 15 to 25 ish, dedicated to multiple gaming genres and hours of logged gaming time.  Not many think of the other spectrum of this, the over 30, over 40, and yes well beyond the over 50 age group whom find gaming, online or console, their relaxation, hobby or escape.

I recently went to a PTA meeting, now mind you, I am not your typical Mom to begin with, but I have cut a nitch for myself amongst some of the parents there.  But there are those that feel multicolored hair and big tattoos are a sign of the anti Christ and just wont have it.  Anyhow,I was getting myself some coffee and I over heard one of the parents talking about how they felt their son’s online gaming was just a huge no-no. The parent went on to state how they didn’t know much about the game itself but was sure it had some sort of nudity because they  just couldn’t understand his need to be playing it.   I of course politely butted in, asking if they new the name of the game.  They told me it was Runescape, I laughed and told them he was quite safe and in fact told them that if they were concerned could turn off the chat feature, I went on and then soon realized that the “deer in headlights look” was on all the faces of the the small crowd.  Then a woman asked, well how do you know so much about all of this, with a snide smile.  I replied, well.. I’m a gamer.

And all of hell and the heavens above ripped open and famine and devastation tore through the world……

Yes, this was the look on her face, her eyes scanned my hair, my half sleeve, and she replied.. Well, that figures.

I laughed and cited her for being ignorant in her child’s life.. Sure maybe wasn’t the best thing I could of said but, hey, she pissed me off.  Besides the generic bias of gamers, there is the society bias on gamers in general.  We cant possiblybe right in the head or have a life if we game.  No one seems to turn their head when Billy Joe is collecting massive number 88’s and his only ambition is to go FAST.  No one seems to think the excessive collecting of salt and pepper shakers seems a bit off, maybe not, but when your entire house is a living museum dedicated to the black and white flavorings.. well I happen to think that’s a bit odd.

It wasn’t until about 2 years into my Kings of Chaos career that I realized how biased I even was.  I was sitting at my computer and was “sabotaging” another account.  My daughter, then 6 was watching me and asked what I was doing.  I told her, in the simplist way what I was doing.  She asked if she could try, and I let her.  She successfully sabotaged 120 defense weapons, and then I showed her how to break them, and read the attack report to her.  She smiled and said “That was fun Mom!  Can i do it again”  Needless to say she got a DS a long with her brothers that year for x mas.  But even I was roped into the thinking that because she is female, Ill give her “the girl games” and the girl stuff.

I guess what I’m saying is it always surprises me when the “society norm” look down upon a group for being “too old” for something or because I am female or because he is a CEO of a bank. I love to game, I love the people whom game, I love the society of gamers.  Its no different in my eyes then the collective Nascar supporters or the hardcore football followers.

By the way, did I tell you i skateboard too?

For all of you fans of the text based MMO’s, well a baby has been born in the gaming world, just barely 2 months old this text based MMO is surprisingly a breath of fresh air!

Alex Priebe aka Nightmare in game created this MMO on a whim. Do we think it will make him rich, no, but for a lover of the text based MMOs, I think its a nice breath of fresh gaming air.  Similar to Kings of Chaos and Ruins of Chaos, Alex’s MMO, The Shadow Wars, gives us a bigger variety of races and bonuses for those races, but he adds a bit more still by making certain races have enemies, which will effect them differently in combat.

Each color is the enemy of another color (like a 5 way Rock-Paper-Scissors). See the arrows on the picture above? Whichever color your chosen color points towards is your enemy, and you get an extra 10% bonus to your damage whenever you’re in combat against that color.

The game is eye appealing, no harsh contrast, so for the die hard text based MMO gamer, yes you can sit and wait for the next turn.  Speaking of turns, well you wont get a rash of people taking your gold, being you get attack turns every 4 hours, and like a lot of these text based games, there is no clicking needed to up your army, this game is pure UP. Another feature I do like is your TBG (turn based gold) comes every 10 minutes, so growth isnt something you have to wait for.  Sure there is room for growth and expantion, but for something born 2 months ago, I think Alex is on the right track.

In my opinion for a game that was seemingly thrown together, it has the desire and the possibility to be something bigger then it is now. If you, like me enjoy the relaxing pace sometimes of a text based MMo, then show some support for a guy and his baby and join TSW.

The Shadow Wars

So, Im pretty damn evil in my games I play.  But it is still just a game.  anddddd no one likes me, well except those that have realised it is just a game.  Somewhere in the deepest darkest realms of the Internets there is a guy on a bike and he is riding as fast as his little feet can peddle.

Why?

So he can run the one very and only computer in a town where they hold the death shrine to me.  On a very cold stone is my name, in blood i imagine. With sentiments of smut ridden language, this man peddles and another man yells in some off language, FASTER FASTER!

He then posts on the group forum how his entire village will sacrifice their only goat in a ceremony that will disease my crops and ravage my herds. *blinks*

Ohhhkay, and yes, he did say this. Why? Well I sabotaged his alliance and wiped out their DA, duh.  Well of course it makes pure sense now.

How a person can get so angry with someone is irrashional. I digress.

An entire community, based on my actions in a game, loathes the mouse I click. To an extend a few years back, people paid a hacker to hack my account and some in my alliance. What drives people to such a hate, they would pay cash money to another to destroy sometihng that can simply be replaced with the click of a button and a new account.  But these people still came at me, and still do, not with such a force though.  Death threats, insults, secret meetings about how to run me out of the game.

They still hate, but not with such a drive and desire as they did in the past.  Some hold grudges, and when they encounter me it leaves them with memories they just cant let go.  As if I had personally come to their home and taken their last piece of candy, or for that matter, their mouse.

It is mind boggling to me that the role I play in a text based game, enrages some to fits of drinking and cursing and yelling, and I don’t even get to enjoy it. How can someone hate another like this. Most have never seen me, most have no idea whom I am where I live, they just know that whomever sits behind my account they have a passionate hate for.

Surprisingly, most of these people are not teens or young adults, they are older men and women with families and jobs.  Whom outside their text based realms no one knows of this brewing hate for a women about a million miles away, on the Internet. And the only thing I did was play a game.

Its an interesting emotion online.  I mean sure you hear of people falling in love online, so i assume the same can be said of hate and loathing. But you don’t fall in love because of an account in a game. Makes me laugh a bit when I think about it.

     There are such a big amount of  MMOs. Most being built by smaller scale programmer’s and coders.  Seems that if you haven’t tried your hand at one, pfftt then who are you in the net world!  I consider  smaller games with about 5k less players.  Usually its player base is friends that followed from another game or word of mouth, not a whole lot goes into advertising because the whole lot of money that is to be had goes to pay for servers. This doesn’t mean at all that the game itself isn’t good. Just means its small.  A lot of these games have the foundation to be a Maple Story or a Runescape, it just takes some time and patience.  In a market of MMOs are a dime a dozen, texts based games may end up prevailing as it seems the 3d MMOs dont have the technical abilities to offer seasoned gamers, Offering something the 3d games are lacking in, and that’s self imagination.

The problem with these smaller scale MMOs is that they don’t give you anything different from the next one, they all have the base same races, elves, humans, orcs, dwarf’s, undead. Some may get fancy and offer you Dark Elves or the likes, they all have the same bonuses it seems within game.  I think with these games to get bigger and more known in the gaming circle they need to offer something extra that will catch the gaming eye.

I have played so many of these that I surely get bored and move on, as not many do actually lead to something new or exciting. One game I used to play a lot of though, was Martial Law www.martiall.com .

In this game you have a character whom has mercenaries whom fight for you. you can train them, or really train them with paying for lessons.  There is a town where you can purchase items and sell items.  A labyrinth of different levels exists where you can fight demons and ghosts for weapons.  You can train, up different stats to hold more weapons, or get more gold per turn. What I did like about this game was after you were done using your turns to battle, you could still level in the labyrinth, or go into town and play games for gold, go hunting for different items. It didn’t leave you bored until the next reset.  It left you with other things to do.

This is also another game I play, currently. I like it because after u battle to level yourself you can go into what they call the “spacial field” It goes from text to a 3d environment. you can land on planets and build them up, attack and destroy or mine and harvest. All of these things helping to develop your character. This game has in-game forums as well, for the community and for your own alliance if you choose to join one. I like that aspect as it keeps people in game.  A lot of times smaller scale games suffer the more active forums because people just cant be bothered to log out and go to the forums to see the latest update or gripe about players or the admins themselves.

These are my 2 hot pic games of the month, if you like text based with a bit of 3 d actions and more things to do and skills to learn then just battling, then i suggest you try these games.

Uvi as I new him, a great kid, much like my own, with such style and pizazz and well a lust for life, when i met him i even thought he was a bit older. We talked alot about life and family , he was Muslim living in the UK, i admired his knowledge and how he just made everyone we chatted with laugh.
We talked often, Uvi and I, he did the music for a web site for mine, loved music, would always pop on msn and tell me to listen to this or look at that. I wish I would of talked to him more, said more, learned of him more. He was a bright young man with such a future.. SOOOO smart, was incredible.
I had met this young man in an online gaming community. HE was funny and made jokes about everything. We all learned to love him and adore him as his personality was just uplifting. There were many times, even for one so young as Uvi, where I would be troubled about something and he would find some wisdom about it, and it always blew me away. I would say to him, how do you know so much Uvi for being so young, he would just laugh and go “idk, I just do” and laugh some more. HE was loved by so many of us, and to have him taken away, at such a young age, to not know his future his loves, his losses or children he might of had, is such a waste of alife. I try to find reasoning in it, and I cant.

I was in chat, but not paying attention doing my homework and a friend Sadi gave me the bad news. It hit me like a knife in my chest. Ugh i cant even explain the feeling, i denied it was him, and Sadi posted to me it was the same name, the same age and the same town. I closed my eyes and opened them again hoping it was a mistake, and i clicked the link.

And I cried

16 years old, and some God found it crucial to take him from his parents, his siblings, his family and friends. I CANT understand it. I’m trying. But i look at my own children and I wonder If i could be so forgiving, I know I couldn’t. As a mother i cry for his loss, and as a friend I cry for what was lost.

So many conversations not had, we both used to agree that the Internet was an amazing thing. Because it brought people to be friends of all different races and religious beliefs and ages, through out the world. he was so right. I’m so blessed that this young man had touched my life for so little time as he did. I can only hope his mother find some solice with the situation, and I’m unsure of their Muslim beliefs but I know his god had to of had better things for him in store.

you will be missed Uvi, your courage, your intelligence, you love of life, and the way you could make a chat room light up was amazing. Im glad to have called you my friend. And I know that if you had been my child, I would of been so proud of you, to have called you a son. There are very few people in this world with such a charm about them, you were one of them Uvi.

I had to wait a couple days before I blogged about this,. His death was so tragic and such a waste of a beautiful life, and Im having a hard time with closure on this, maybe because he was so young, and so talented, I just feel it wasn’t his time, and how unfair. If my children grow to be half the young man he was, they will be better off in life.
